Twice expelled from Communist Party for siding with Zinov’yevite opposition but reinstated after publicly recanting his errors and expressing solidarity with Party and government policy. December 1934 arrested and tried for alleged complicity in assassination of Kirov on 1 December 1934. 29 December 1934 sentenced to death, along with other defendants, by Assizes of Military Collegium, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Supreme Court.
