1884 worked at Professor Kovalcvskiy’s Laboratory, Odessa. 1889-1896 professor, Warsaw University. 1907-1921 director Zoological Museum, Academy of Sciences, Saint St. Petersburg.
1921-1931 director, Laboratory of Experimental Zoology, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1924-1930 also director, Sebastopol Biological Station. Studied morphology, taxonomy, fauna, zoogeography, ekology and embryology of invertebrates (insects, lower crustaceans, turbellaria, et cetera) and some vertebrates such as wild sheep, African ostrich, et cetera
Studied organ regeneration in animals. 1916 sponsored foundation of Russian Academy of Sciences Commission to Study Lake Baykal and Organize Baykal Biological Station (now the Baykal Limnological Station). 1911 began work on his major study Fauna Rossii i sopredcl’nykh stran (The Fauna of Russia and Contiguous Countries) and then “Fauna USSR” (Fauna of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics), 25 volume of which appeared under his editorship.
