In his childhood took balalaika lessons from A. M. Dykhov and V. V. Andreyev, a member of the Great Russian Orchestra. Also took violin lessons.
1928-1939 soloist, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. 1940-1945 conductor and artistic director, State Rusian Folk Orchestra, which now bears his name. Collaborated with various composers in the writing of pieces for solo balalaika, including a concerto by South. North. Vasilenko and M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s fantasia “The Sewing Gathering”.
