SOKOLOV, Nikolay was born in 1903.
1929 graduated Graphics Faculty, Higher Art and Technology Institute, Moscow.
Individual work on landscape painting and graphic portraiture. 1924 did joint caricatures for Art and Technology Studios wall newspaper. Since 1926 publications caricatures in youth journal “Komsomoliya”.
Since 1933 permanent work for “Pravda” as political cartoonists. Joint Works: 1935 series of caricatures of counterrevolutionaries for “Istoriya grazhdanskoy voyny” (History of the Civil War). 1936-1937 cartoons against Spanish fascism.
1941-1945 poster “Mercilessly Smash and Destroy the Enemy”, etc. During WWII did numerous political propaganda posters in series “Windows of USSR Telegraph Agency”. Illustrations for literature classics: Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” and works by Saltykov-Shchedrin, Chekhov, Gogol, etc.
Especially well-known paintings: “The Old Bosses” (1936-1937). “Morning” (1938); “The Flight of the Germans from Novgorod” (1944-1946). “The End” (1947-1948), depicting Hitler’s bunker just before the fall of Berlin.
“Kerensky’s Last Way-out” (1957), etc. Paintings in Tretyakovsky Gallery: “The Old Bosses”, “Tanya”, and “The End”.
