1913 arrested for participation in May Day demonstration. After his release headed workers’ circles in Vyborg Rayon. From March 1916 member, Executive Commission, Pctrograd Party Committee.
Editor, newspaper “Proletarskiy golos”. Summer 1916 Party work at Verkh-lsetsk Plant in the Urals. 1917 Party work among Petrograd streetcar workers.
From May 1917 touring agitator in Ural Oblast. After 1917 October Revol secretary, Vyborg Rayon Soviet of Workers’ Deputy. Sent to Permanent’; elected to Constituent Assembly from Permanent’ Province.
Worked for Permanent’ Oblast Soviet and Permanent' Oblast Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Committee. Appointed detachment commander and fought against Dutov’s troops. In Yekaterinburg appointed deputy commander, Siberian and Ural Front.
Then political comissar in Red Army. 1919 head, Cultural and Education Department, Petrograd Okrug Military Commissariat. During Yudenich’s offensive organized defense of Luga.
