After graduate military surgeon and assistant, Professor K.K. Reyer’s Surgical Clinic. Until 1884 served on Caucasian Front. From 1885 physician with Red Cross Krcstovozdvizhenskaya Community.
1889 defended doctor’s thesis. 1895 appointed professor, Academy Clinic, Military Medical Academy. 1910-1912 head Military Medical Academy.
Wrote many works which have become classics of their kind: a study of the effects of light. Studies of the effects of ultraviolet radiation on bacteria, lupus exudens, epitheliomas and connective tissue. Pioneered techniques of light therapy in Russia.
Did research on tuberculosis surgery and popularized modern tuberculosis surgery techniques at congresses and in the medical press Founded at Vindava a seaside sanatorium for the treatment of bone tuberculosis. One of first to study how arthritis is affected by removal of the thyroid gland.
Described thyrotoxic effects of thyroid gland on some forms of joint ailments and isolated a particular form which he called “polyarthritis progressiva chronica thyreotoxica”. Studied care, training and assistance of people crippled by injuries or as a result of bone tuberculosis and rickets. To this end founded an asylum-school at the Maksimilian Clinic, as well as the first First-Aid Committee in Saint St. Petersburg.
Made major contributions to the study of industry injuries. 1907 founded Workers’ Expertise Bureau. Also worked for Red Cross.
Organized supplies and medical aid in Chinese War, Russo-Japanese War and World War 1. From April 1917 chief field sanitary inspector. After World War 1 concentrated on writing.
Founder, Saint St. Petersburg Medical Surgical Social. Founded first surgical journal “Khirurgicheskiy vestnik”. (1885—1894), which was later merged with the “Letopis’ russkoy khirurgii” (1896— 1901) and was then called the “Russkiy khirurgicheskiy arkhiv” (1902-1909) and from 1910 until it ceased publication in 1917 the “Khirurgicheskiy arkhiv Vel’yaminova”.
