During student years became involved with Populist movement. 1874-1877 imprisoned for spreading revol ideas among peasants. 1884 defended master’s thesis on ‘Telephonic Studies of Electrical Phenomena in the Muscular and Nerve Apparatus”.
Pioneered research on the laws governing the reaction of stimulated systems 1886 defended doctor’s thesis on “The Interrelationship of Excitation and Stimulation in Tetanus”. From 1889 professor, Saint St. Petersburg University.
1900 Honorary president, Paris Medical Congress. Member, National Health Social and Social of Psychiatrists and Neuropathologists. Taught at Higher Women's Courses and, from 1907, at Psychoneurological Institute.
Company-founder, Social of Physiologists. 1917 co-organized 1st Russian Physiological Congress. Soviet representative, Organization(s) Bureau for International Physiological Congresses.
Member, Saint St. Petersburg Social of Natural Scientists. Wrote numerous works. Edited various publications of Saint St. Petersburg Social of Natural Scientists and Physiological Laboratory, Saint St. Petersburg University.
