He graduated from the Borisoglebsk Military Pilots Air School , then he attended Higher Officer Flight and Tactical Courses.
Dunaev participated in the Great Patriotic War. He was a commander of the squadron of the 270th Fighter Regiment (5th Air Army, Steppe Front). By September 1943, made 337 sorties, in 38 air battles personally shot down 13 enemy planes and 7 in the group. Since 1960 he was a Colonel of the reserve and lived in Moscow. In 1998 in Novohoperska there was established a bust and later a memorial plaque in the village of Blanka, Talovskogo district - (2007).
