He graduated from high school in the city of Buturlinovka, Leningrad Hydrographic Institute (1940).
In 1937-1938, Nikolay Yakovlevich participated in a research expedition on the Sedov icebreaker. In 1940 he led a hydrographic expedition aboard the Whirlwind to measure the oceanic depths from the White Sea to the Bering Strait. After the end of the expedition, he set off on the icebreaker steamer Malygin from Providence Bay to Vladivostok. The ship suffered a disaster near the coast of Kamchatka, the crew and passengers died.
