Strinning was born in Kramfors, and came from a Swedish family with origins in the 18th Century in Ångermanland.
In the 1940s, he studied architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan).
The name was taken at the beginning of the 20th Century by the family farm "Strinningen" north of Härnösand. Already as a student, he designed a dish rack which consisted of plastic coated metal wires. In 1952 he founded the two companies String Design Bachelor of Arts and Swedish Design Bachelor of Arts. Nisse Strinning is rightly seen as a contemporary design classic (see other article).
