Khrushcheva is the granddaughter of Leonid Khrushchev, eldest son of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. When Leonid died in World World War II, Nikita adopted Leonid"s two-year-old daughter Julia, Nina"s mother. Nikita Khrushchev is thus Nina Khrushcheva"s biological great-grandfather, but adoptive grandfather.
Khrushcheva"s father, Lev Petrov, died in 1970, aged 47.
She is the author of Imagining Nabokov: Russia Between Art and Politics and The Lost Khrushchev: A Journey into the Gulag of the Russian Mind, and member of Council on Foreign Relations.
