Buschel was born in Philadelphia and grew up in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

He began writing screenplays at the age of 19. Buschel"s first film, Bringing Rain, premiered at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival. His second film, Neal Cassady, was distributed by International Finance Corporation. His third film, The Missing Person, premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and earned Buschel a Gotham Award nomination for Breakthrough Director.
His 2012 film Sparrows Dance was named Best Narrative Feature at the 2012 Austin Film Festival.
He has collaborated with cinematographer Ryan Samul on four films: The Missing Person, Sparrows Dance, Glass Chinese and The Phenom.
