Background
Nobunao Nambu was born in 1546, Mutsu (Iwate Prefecture). He was adopted as heir to Harunobu Nambu upon his death.

Career
In 1586, he sent, a messenger to Toshiie Maeda and through Maeda's mediation cultivated the friendship of Hideyoshi Toyotomi whoseprestige was rapidly rising. When Hideyoshi attacked the Hojos in Odawara (1590), he met Hideyoshi there and received from him a sealed letter which assured his fief. Nobunao subdued Masazane Kokonoe, who rebelled against Hideyoshi, and was given an additional fief of 100,000 koku fo r the exploit. When Hideyoshi carried out his expedition to Korea, Nobunao led his forces to Nagoya (Nagasaki Prefecture) which was Hideyoshi's headquarters.
