Nonin was a founder of the Sampoji Temple in Settsu (Osaka Prefecture). Because some people made light of him for having had no teacher, be sent two of his disciples to China (Sung Dynasty) in 1189 to ask Bussho (Fu-chao), a distinguished Zen priest in that country, to give him some proof acknowledging him as a disciple. The two messengers brought back a priest's robe and a portrait of Dharma with Bussho's writings on it. The Chinese priest's gift made Nonin famous and he was called the founder of the Japanese Dharma Sect.
