Women At Risk: We Also Served is about women who served our country since before World War II to present day. All branches of the military are included, officers and enlisted personnel, as well as women who volunteered as civilians going to a war zone, those that stayed stateside, and other loved ones. Included are clerks, drivers, heavy equipment operators, nurses, USO and ARC volunteers, and more. These women explain some of the things they did or do in the military or as civilians. They tell us why they volunteered, how their lives were changed, and answer the question, Would I do it again? More than sixty women are profiled in this book. Their stories are finally being sharedmany for the first time. This book is for readers of all ages including students. It will encourage patriotism as you read each chapter. They encourage both the reader and listener to talk more and ask questions about their own family military background.Noonie Fortin realized there was a need for this type of book each time she entered a bookstore and couldnt find very many books about women who served their country.

Author Noonie Fortin writes from direct experience when she suggests ways to reach young Americans about their predecessors labors of love for our country at war. Most of this book s wartime reminiscences are about women: military personnel, USO performers, Red Cross workers, Martha Raye and other Hollywood stars, mothers of those who gave their lives, but men also contributed their stories about legend Martha Raye. Fortin shares her experiences of speaking to and participating with Veterans and community groups all over the country since her first book, Memories of Maggie, was published (1995).

(The unique story of Martha Raye and her military experience.)
Quotations:
Noonie Fortin told CA: "All my writing prior to 1987 was for military training and procedural manuals. Once I became involved in researching the life of Martha Raye to get the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her, my entire life changed.
I found myself completely immersed in her life and the lives of those military members with whom she chose to spend her time. When the medal was finally Presented to her, many people asked what I was going to do with the information I had gathered. My response was to put as much of it as possible into a hook about Martha Raye’s life, to let the world know what she did to deserve the medal and why so many veterans would have given their lives for her. She was a truly remarkable woman.
I believe the American public and the world should know what women do for their country, whether they are celebrities, military personnel, physicians, or just Plain, everyday folks. Their lives and achievements are just as important as those of many well known Politicians or military officers.
I. myself, came from humble beginnings. I paid my way through college, going to night school when I could afford to go at all. I didn’t take out student loans or have my mother pay my way. It took me a long time to get my degree, but I am satisfied. I had discovered that, even with a degree, I could not advance any further in my civilian or military jobs.
Not having set out to be a writer, I am astonished that i have accomplished as much as I have. I never expected to become a household name to so many veterans. I am glad that I had the opportunity to meet Martha Raye and so many of her friends from the veterans community across the nation. They are all very special to me and will always be in my mind. I am currently enjoying touring the country to talk about the woman I came to know as Maggie, and Meeting some of the people with whom I corresponded for many years while working on the project to have her honored by the president of the United Crates. My life has mingled with hers so much that I have already begun to write a sequel showing how she affected my own life."
