Slawik graduated from Rincon High School in Tucson, Arizona, then attended Arizona State University, where she received her Bachelor of Surgery in Recreation Administration. She trained with the United Way of America after graduating from college. She later attended the in Minneapolis, earning her Master of Public Administration from the Humphrey School.
From 1997-1998 and 2001-2002, she represented District 57A, and from 2003-2102, she represented District 55B, which includes portions of Ramsey and Washington counties and the cities of Maplewood and Oakdale in the eastern part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. A Democrat, she is also an educator, serving as an instructor at the University of Minnesota, and a nonprofit consultant by profession. Slawik was first elected in 1996 and served one term.
She ran again in 2000, was elected for six more consecutive terms.
Prior to the 2002 legislative redistricting, she represented the old District 57A. She served on a variety of committees including as Chair of the Early Learning Finance Division, Health Care and Human Services Finance Division. State Government Finance Division and Ways and Means.
She served as an assistant minority leader during the 2003-2004 biennium. In 2012, she announced that she was stepping down.
In the primary, she received 60% of the vote, and faced former Mayor Diana Longrie in the November election.
She serves as the Policy Advisory Chair of the Rush Lincolnshire Task Force. Executive Committee of the Transportation Advisory Board, Gateway Corridor Commission and Secretary of the Minnesota Mayors Association. Slawik has been active in her local community through the years.
She is on the North Star Scouting Museum Board, the Suburban Ramsey Family Collaborative Board and is a past President of the local League of Women Voters and a past board member of the Autism Society of Minnesota.
