Norihiko Asakawa born in Kochi Prefecture in 1865.
He studied medicine under Tokusuke Nakae when young and then studied at the Saisei Gakusha School in Tokyo. Joined the staff of the Infectious Disease Research Institute of the Home Ministry in 1894, where he assisted Shiba- saburo Kitazato, its director.
Engaging in experiments in sera production and serum treatment, he evolved the theory of natural immunity to tetanus and studied toxicosis.
