Norishige Koyama

Background

Norishige Koyama was born in 1777 in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture).

Education

After publishing his diary in 1822, Norishige Koyama settled at Edo and studied waka poetry under Kageki Kagawa and was ranked amongst the 10 most distinguished disciples of Kageki.

Career

Later Norishige Koyama made an extensive tour of Ezo District (Hokkaido) and his diary of these travels were published under the title "Ezo-Nikki" (1822) and is prized even today as a record of the geography, customs and manners of Hokkaido at that time.
