Hestudied at Oriel College, Oxford before then studying for ordination at Street Stephen"s House, Oxford. He was an assistant curate at Christ Church and Street Ann"s, Newcastle from 1982 to 1987 and priest in charge until 1990. He was Vicar of Street Paul"s, Whitley Bay, from 1990 until 2000.
Latterly he was Vicar of Walsingham.
Episcopal ministry
Banks was appointed the third Bishop of Richborough. On 16 June 2011, he was consecrated as a bishop at Southwark Cathedral by Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
