Norman received Bachelor of Arts in Communications at University Washingtonin 1972. Before that he attended McDonald Elementary School, John Marshall Junior High School, and Lincoln High School.
Norman worked as an editorial director at Publishers Professional Services in Seattle. Then he was an editor at Alaska NW Publishing in 1978-1984. In 1984 he was a partner and vice president of КС Aly & Co. Communications. Since 1985 he is a president of Laing Communications.
Norman is a trustee at Western States Arts Federation and Pacific Northwest Writers Conference.
On August 8, 1982, Norman married Christine Anne Laing, with whom he has three children: Jacob Laing, Hannah Laing Bolotin and Zachary Laing.
