He also served in the Royal Military Police during his National Service. Godman first stood for Parliament in the 1979 General Election when he contested Aberdeen South, but he was defeated by the Conservative incumbent Iain Sproat by 772 votes. From 1988-1989 he was Opposition spokesman for Agricultural and Rural Affairs.
