Joined 74th Highlanders, 1858. Retired as Captain, 1872. Aide-de-camp to General Sir Hope Grant, Commander-in-Chief at Madras, 1863-1865.
Protector of immigrants and member of Executive Council, Natal, 1874.
Political agent to Swazis during Zulu War, 187S-79. Commanded Swazi army at attack on Sekukuni, 1879.
Visited Victoria Falls and hunted on Zambesi R. 1875. Decorated for services, 1878-1879.
23rd Chief of Clan, Justice of the Peace, Deputy-Lieutenant.
