Practiced medicine, 1841-1853. Member Kentucky House of Representatives, 1850,51-53. Commissioner Custom House, Louisville, Kentucky, 1853-1857.

President South Western Telegraph Company. 1st to conceive idea of nat. consolidation of telegraph companies, formed North America Telegraph Company (formed basis of Western Union). Vice president Western Union, 1866-1878, president, 1878-1893.
