Ushijima Noshi was born in 1812 in Chikugo Province (Fukuoka Prefecture), Japan.
It is said that one autumn evening while Noshi Ushijima was sipping tea at home, her eyes fell on a straw matting that was spotted with soot. The black and white pattern fascinated her and she began imaging how it would be like in cloth. For year and a half she experimented and was finally able to produce the type of pattern which is now known as Kasuri.
Since then the fabric has been improved several times and it is today very popular for its soft, somber and smooth feeling.
Noshi Ushijima married a farmer named Tashichi Ushijima and bore him a daughter.
