In 1850 he entered the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, and in 1853 the French School in Athens, where he wrote his first thesis on the history of the island of Chios.

In 1855 Fustel began teaching at the Lycee in Amiens, France, and later at the Lycee St. Louis in Paris. In 1860 he was called to the University of Strasbourg, where his historical lectures gained great popularity. In 1864 he published his first important work, The Ancient City, a comparative study of Greek and Roman societies. In 1870 he returned to Paris, where he became a lecturer at the Ecole Normale in 1871. Four years later he taught at the Sorbonne, and in 1880 he became director at the Ecole Normale. Later he taught once more at the Sorbonne.
