Campomaiorense (1995-1996), Vitória de Setúbal (1997-1998), Christian Science Marítimo (1998, 1999–2000), F.C. Paços de Ferreira (1999), Communicative Disorders Aves (2000-2001) and U.D. Oliveirense (2001-2002), having abroad stints with UD Salamanca (playing in only two matches in a 1997 second division promotion) and Civil Defense Díter Zafra (also in Spain), retiring at only 28. Afonso also represented the nation at the 1993 Fédération internationale de football association World Youth Championship in Australia, in an eventual group stage exit (three losses).
