Ghani was educated in state schools before going onto Birmingham City University and gaining a master"s degree from the University of Leeds.
Before involvement in politics, she was employed campaigning for charities Age United Kingdom and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, before working for the British Broadcasting Corporation World Service. Ghani is the daughter of immigrants from Azad Kashmir. Ghani first stood for Parliament at the 2010 General Election, when she was the candidate for Birmingham Ladywood.
Her selection was in an open primary where anyone listed on the constituency’s electoral register was eligible to attend and vote for their preferred candidate.
The primary attracted nearly 400 residents from across the constituency.
