Odd Swarting is a Swedish lawyer based in Stockholm, known for advising on corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, labour, insolvency, and sports and events. He studied law at the University of Stockholm, served as a junior judge in the 1980s, and later practised in life science and healthcare regulation.
Background
Odd Swarting was born on 26 May 1957 in Stockholm, the capital and largest city of Sweden. His registered full name is Sven Odd Swarting, and he is known by the given name Odd.
Stockholm was the setting for his education, his early legal training, and his later practice, all of which took place in the city.
Education
Swarting studied law at the University of Stockholm and completed a law degree in 1982. The institution was founded as a college in 1878 and was granted university status in 1960, becoming Sweden's fourth state university. Its law faculty has a longer history, beginning in the autumn of 1907 as the Department of Political and Legal Science at the University College of Stockholm. In 1959 the Riksdag ordered the college to move to Frescati, outside the town centre, and most of its operations had relocated there by 1970.
His professional biography also lists financial studies alongside the 1982 law degree.
Career
Swarting held a junior judgeship at the District Court of Handen from 1983 to 1985. Swedish district courts (tingsrätter) are the country's first-instance courts, and Handen lies in the Stockholm region south of the capital.
From 1988 to 2002 he was a partner at Advokatfirman Lindahl, a Stockholm business law practice. The firm traces its origins to Alf Lindahl's law firm, founded in Stockholm in 1918. The Stockholm practice moved to Strandvägen 5 A in 1966, and after a 1988 invitation to merge with other Swedish business law firms it became part of the combined firm that adopted the Advokatfirman Lindahl name in 1990.
He was also a partner at Setterwalls, and later at Calissendorff Swarting, where he served as a partner from September 2015 until 2019. Setterwalls partnership ended in September 2015.
He serves as a board member of Advokat Odd Swarting AB, a limited company registered in Stockholm in August 2015 to conduct advokat activities.
Since joining Cirio Advokatbyrå as senior counsel, he has worked within the firm's life science, healthcare and food group. His practice covers market access, including pricing and subsidies, commercial contracts, research and development projects, public sector issues, and advice to distressed companies on liquidation and restructuring. Cirio Advokatbyrå has about 150 employees and operates in the Stockholm area.
He has also written several legal articles and has served on a number of boards and commissions.
Membership
The Swedish Bar Association (Sveriges advokatsamfund) was founded in 1887 as a voluntary association of academically trained lawyers seeking to improve the administration of justice and the standing of the legal profession. It gained official recognition when the Swedish Code of Judicial Procedure took effect in 1948, and it now has more than 6,400 members. Only its members may use the protected professional title advokat. Swarting has been a member since 1988.
The International Bar Association brings together bar associations and law societies from many countries, providing a forum for lawyers who practise across national borders.
UNICEF Sweden works for children's rights, a field grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Swarting chaired its board in 2015.
