Ogata Kenzan was born in Kyoto into a rich merchant family. His older brother was the painter Ogata Korin (1658–1716).

Ogata Kenzan studied with the potter Nonomura Ninsei and made his own kiln. In 1712 a nobleman began patronizing his kiln, he moved to the east area of Kyoto. He is associated with Kyo ware. In 1713, he moved to Edo where he also spent the rest of his life.His pottery was prized for its elegance as Kenzan-yaki. Many of his pictures bear on them waka poems of his own composition brushed by himself. His pictures, with their vivid sensibility, resemble those of Sotatsu Nomura rather than those of his elder brother which are distinguished by perfect composition.
Ogata Kōrin (1658 – June 2, 1716) was a Japanese painter, lacquerer and designer of the Rinpa school.
