Ogata Shunsaku was a physician of the Dutch school. When an epidemic of smallpox broke out in his clan (1789), he tried out vaccination with such success that it became widespread.
Background
Ogata Shunsaku was born on September 10, 1748. Belonged to the Akizuki Clan in Chikuzen Province (Fukuoka Prefectme).
Achievements
He wrote a booklet on the necessity of vaccination (1795), this being the first publication in Japan on the subject.
