Taketora Ogata was a Japanese journalist, Vice President of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper and later a politician. During the war, he joined the Imperial Rule Assistance Association. After the end of the war, he was purged from public service. Later, he became the Chief Secretary of the 4th Yoshida Cabinet, Vice President and then President of the Liberal Party of Japan.

Taketora Ogata was born in Fukuoka Prefecture, 1888.

Education

Ogata Taketora studied at Fukuoka Prefectural Shuyukan High School, where Seigo Nakano was his one-year senior. Of the same age was Daigoro Yasukawa. He graduated from the Politico-Economics Department, Waseda University (1911) and joined the staff of the Asahi Shimbun.

Career

Ogata Taketora became a director and editor-in-chief of the paper (1936). During World War II, he was a State Minister and Chief Cabinet Secretary. After the war, he was Chief Cabinet Secretary of the Higashikuni Cabinet (1945) but was soon purged. After being depurged (1952), he returned to political life and was appointed Deputy Prime Minister (1953) in the fifth Yoshida Cabinet. Elected president of Liberal Party (1954).
