Background
Ogura Sojiro was born in 1843. He was a son of a Shinto Shrine carpenter. Bereaved of his parents when he was still a child, he was raised by an aunt.

When he went to Tokyo, he was so impressed by marble sculptures he saw at a museum that he studied sculpture at the Engineering College and under Vincenzo Ragusa, professor at the Tokyo Fine Arts School.
