Ogurusu Kocho endeavored to bring harmony among the five branches of his sects (1869) and subsequently among all Buddhist sects. Pioneered missionary work in northern Japan and China and endeavored to establish a prison chaplain system and Buddhist women's associations. He wrote a history of Lamaism and other books.
He championed the cause of harmony between Buddhism and Shintoism.
