He took part in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). After the war, he graduated from the Military College (1913).
Ohama Ishitaro was appointed an instructor at the Infantry School and then attached to the Inspectorate General of Military Education. He was appointed commander of the 10th Division. Pioneered the establishment of machine-gun units in the army and their training.
