1903-1906 studied music in Samara. 1907-1909 took opera courses in Saint St. Petersburg.
1909-1911 toured various Russian cities with private opera troupe. Sang Vanya in Ivan Susanin, Olga in Yevgeniy Onegin, et cetera From 1913 performed Russian folk songs.
In 1920's repeatedly performed with Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics folk groups abroad. Performed in Sweden, Norway, Finland, France and Germany. From 1924 sang in radio concerts.
At first performed mainly folk songs which she had learned as a child in Saratov Province (from time to time songs which had been written by other collectors). Later Kovalyova greatly extended her repertoire. Excelled at wedding songs and old lyrical songs for women.
