Koch received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cologne in 1982. Twelve years later he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Munster.
Koch began his career as a fellow in hematology at the University of Munster in 1984. Four years later he took a position of an attending physician at the University of Bonn. Olaf was a visiting scientist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center from 1991 to 1992.
In 1992, he became an attending physician at the University of Munster. Since 1994 he has been a professor in internal medicine at the same university. Also since 1996 Koch has been a head of the department of hematology/oncology at Paracelsus-Klinik Osnabruck.
Koch is a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society for Cancer Research, American Society of Hematology and New York Academy of Sciences.
Olaf Koch is married to Chun-Kyung Lee. They have 2 children.
