He graduated from the Ivan M. Sechenov First Medical Institute in Moscow in 1973 and received a doctorate of medicine in cardiology from the Academy of Medical Science in 1978.
He was selected as a cosmonaut on 9 March 1983. Atkov flew as Doctor Cosmonaut on Soyuz T-10. He spent 236 days 22 hours 49 minutes in space.
Atkov retired on 2 October 1984.
He then joined the institute of Clinical Cardiology. From 1989 to 1996 he was co-Chair of the Space Life Sciences Department during the Summer Session Programs of the International Space University in Strasbourg, France.
He currently works as a specialist for telemedicine with the European Commission.
