Grew up in the Caucasus, where he became interest
ed in mountaineering and hiking. Served as an officer in the Russian Army. Met Baden-Powell during his visit to Petersburg, and became the founder of scouting in Russia, which became very popular on the eve of World War I. Scouting was prohibited by the Bolshevik government, which used some of its elements, transformed and politicized, for their own youth movement, the Pionery.
Took part in the Civil War on the side of the Whites. Scouting continued to exist, survived the evacuation of the Whites from the Crimea, and was recreated in many countries among Russian emigre communities. From the 1920s, lived in the USA, continued to be active in his role as chief of the Russian Scouts, and in the International Scout Movement.
His extremely interesting memoirs, with rare illustrations, have been published in the USA.
