Graduated from the Petersburg Theatre School. Pupil of L. I. Ivanov, M. I. Petipa and Kh.
P. Ioganson. Dancer with the Mariinskii Theatre from 1889. Became the leading dancer of the company. A lyrico-comic talent and exponent of classical ballet.
Danced under the direction of Petipa, Legat and Fokin. Distinguished as an improvisor. Brought new interpretations and variations into her parts.
Guest appearances in Italy, France, England, Germany and South America from 1895. Appearances abroad and at the Mariinskii Theatre from 1909. Directed the movement class at the Mariinskii Opera, and taught classical dance at the Petrograd Choreographic School and at A. L. Volynskii’s School of Russian Ballet,
1917-1921.
Teacher and predecessor of A. I. Vaganova. Emigrated 1921. Founded a ballet school in Paris.
