Studied at Bridge Trust School. Studied under his father and at School of Art, Birmingham. First important picture, In Chancery, bought by late Lord Derby from Liverpool Art Gallery.
Exhibited chiefly landscapes and old architecture at Royal Academy, New Gallery, and Royal Institute. Associate of Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, 1881, full member, 1884. Took up etching, 1880.
Since 1887 has painted chiefly in water-colours.
Active member of Committee of Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings. R.P.E. 18S1; R.C.A. 1908. A. R.C.A. 1894; Artist and Antiquary.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy frequently from 1883 and was elected a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1884.
