Born in Nantawarra, South Australia, he was educated at public schools before becoming a farmer and grazier at Balaklava.
He was director of the State Bank of South Australia, and served as President of the Liberal Federation 1920-1924. In 1934, he was elected to the Australian Senate as a United Australia Party Senator for South Australia. He resigned his place in 1944, necessitating the appointment of Ted Mattner to succeed him.
