Student Virginia Military Institute, 1905-1906. Bachelor of Science, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland., 1911.

Career

Ensign. United States Navy, 1911, promoted through grades to rear admiral. Served in various types of ships, United States Navy, at Vera Cruz, Mexico, 1914, submarine service, World War, 1917-1918, in Chinese waters and at Shanghai, 1932. Became first United States naval attache and United States naval attache for air, United States Legation, Ottawa, Canada, August, 1940.

On duty as staff commander in chief, United States Fleet until March 1942, on sea duty, 1942-1946. Deputy commander of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, 1946-1951. Promoted rear admiral, October 1942.
