Omori Sokun

Background

Omori Sokun was born in 1568. He was a descendant of Hikoshichi Omori, noted warrior of Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture).

Career

Omori Sokun restored shakuhachi music to prosperity after a period of decline. He served Nobunaga Oda in Kyoto but retired after his master's death (1582) and devoted himself to music.

Achievements

• He devised new methods of playing the instrument and made a flute for Emperor Goyozei.
