Background
Omura Sumitada was born in 1533. A descendant of Sumitomo Fujiwara, a rebel warlord in the Heian Period. Sumitada was the son of Harusumi and his early name was Katsudomaru.

Sumitomo's rebellion was suppressed (941) and his family was annihilated except Naosumi, who was later pardoned and became Lord of Kuhara Castle in Omura (Nagasaki Prefecture) around 990. His descendants assumed the family name of Omura.
He was 18th head of Omura family. He pledged loyalty to Hideyoshi Toyotomi (1585). He later served Ieyasu Tokugawa.
He opened up the port of Nagasaki to the Portuguese (1571) and permitted the preaching of Christiamty, he himself receiving baptism. With the support of the lords of Arima and otomo dispatched an emissary to the Roman Papacy (1582).
