Republican nominee for Congress, 3d Nebraska District, 1913. Member Nebraska Constitutional Convention, 1920 (chairman suffrage committee). Elected attorney general of Nebraska 1922, and reelected, 1924, and again in 1926, by two of the largest majorities ever received up to that time by a candidate for state office in Nebraska.
Member of law firm of Spillman & Ptak, Norfolk. Secured seat for farmers in Omaha Grain Exchange. Fought gasoline and power trusts and combines.
Won first victories, and obtained first decrees under discrimination sections of Nebraska anti-trust laws against oil and power companies. Called first National Conference of Attorneys General in Chicago, 1923, and presided over same (26 states and unites states department of Justice represented). Representative of Nebraska in action against “Pittsburgh Plus” system.
