1873 graduate Saint St. Petersburg University.
From 1876 lecturer, from 1891 professor, Saint St. Petersburg University. Also taught at Higher Women's Courses, Elcctr Engineer Institute, Teachers’ Training Institute, Leningrad Communist University, et cetera 1886-1889 studied internal diffusion of light.
1892-1896 studied diffusion of solar energy. Designed actinometer and pyrheliometer which were for a long while standard equipment at Russian meteorological stations. From 1896 concentrated mainly on his Kurs fiziki (Physics Course), used for years in Russian high schools.
This work went through several ed and was translated into German, French and Spanish. Gave public lectures and published many popular sci books and pamphlets.
