He graduated with the candidate.philol. Degree from the University of Oslo and took his Doctor of Philosophy at Yale University in 1969.
He was hired at the University of Bergen as a docent in 1970 and was promoted to professor in 1975, serving until his retirement in 2005. He was also the dean of the Faculty of Humanities from 1979 to 1982. His fields were American literature and the Norwegian-Americans.
He resides at Nygård, Bergen.
He has been a board member of the Western Norway Emigration Center, the European Association for American Studies, the Coimbra Group, president of the Nordic Association for American Studies and editor of the journal American Studies in Scandinavia.
