Oscar Benson was born in Delhi, Iowa, the son of P. C. and Celia Ortberg Benson. His parents were farmers, and upon the death of his father he became the principal support of his mother and three younger siblings. While working in a sawmill to earn money for college, Benson suffered a serious accident that destroyed most of his right hand.
After Oscar was graduated from Epworth (Iowa) Seminary and Junior College in 1898, he continued his studies at Iowa State Teachers' College, the State University of Iowa, and the University of Chicago, financing his education by teaching in country schools.
While superintendent of schools in Wright County, Iowa, from 1904 to 1910, Benson was involved in organizing youth work clubs. As a result of his activities in 1910 he was appointed assistant in charge of club work for the United States Department of Agriculture. Through numerous pamphlets, textbooks, chautauqua lectures, and speeches to farmers' institutes, Benson stimulated the organization of profit making enterprises for farm boys and girls. He encouraged the canning and marketing of home-produced fruits and vegetables, the raising and selling of livestock, and the pursuit of various handicraft activities.
The 4-H symbol (hand, heart, head, health), which he initiated in Iowa, became a trademark for the youth-produced commodities and subsequently the name of the organization Benson was instrumental in founding. The club movement among rural youth peaked during World War I when Benson could report proudly that the more than 251, 000 club members had contributed to the national production of foodstuffs valued at $6, 019, 092. Competition, contests, prizes, awards, and profits were the stimuli that motivated the groups.
Complementary to his work in the Department of Agriculture, Benson was an amateur inventor. Dissatisfied with the methods of home canning publicized by the department, he worked in a basement laboratory in his suburban Maryland home to develop a one-period coldpack method, which he contended allowed housewives to can any product using ordinary kitchen equipment. His enthusiasm was not shared by all his colleagues in the Department of Agriculture. He served from 1921 to 1925, however, as president of the Home Canners' Association of America.
In 1919, at the behest of a group of prominent Eastern industrialists headed by Theodore N. Vail of American Telephone and Telegraph, Benson agreed to serve for five years as the first executive secretary of the Junior Achievement Bureau of the Eastern States League. Generously funded by major corporate interests, the object of the organization was to adapt the same format of entrepreneurial education that Benson had developed for rural youth to the needs of urban children. Working with volunteer advisers from business, enterprising young people created miniature corporations and engaged in a miscellany of commercial activities.
Benson joined the professional staff of the Boy Scouts of America in 1926 and served until his retirement in 1940 as director of rural scouting services. In this capacity he collaborated on a revision of the scouting program to better suit the interests of both city and rural boys; he assisted in developing the manual Scouting for Rural Boys and helped to introduce and give advice on thirty-nine new merit-badge subjects. Benson died in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Oscar Benson was a school teacher who also served as Wright County school superintendent. Benson was recognized for introducing agriculture and domestic science into his teaching. For this purpose he founded the 4-H club establishing the 4-H clover symbol each leaf standing for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Benson also wrote: Agriculture and the Farming Business (1917); Agriculture: A Text for the School and the Farm (1916).
