Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Fritz attended the Milwaukee Law School and graduated from University of Wisconsin Law School.

From 1912 to 1916, Fritz practiced law. In 1916, he was appointed a Wisconsin Circuit Court judge and in 1929, he was appointed to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.In 1959, Fritz became the chief justice of the supreme court and retired in 1954.
His father Theodore Fritz was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate.
