Oscar Tschirky, Swiss maitre d'hotel. Decorated Chevalier of the Crown (Belgian); Chevalier of the Crown (Roumanian); Chevalier de Merite Agricole (French). Became known as Oscar of the Waldorf.

Tschirky, Oscar was born on September 28, 1866 in Locle, Canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Son of August and Antoinette (Fassbind) Tschirky.

Education

Educated Gymnasia, Chaux-de-Fonds, and at Fribourg.

Career

Came to the United States, 1883, naturalized, 1888. Began as maitre d'hotel with old Hoffman House, New York City, later with Delmonicos’, also with Waldorf-Astoria since opened, 1893. Owner of model 1,000 acre farm near New Paltz, New York.

Said to know more people from all over the world than any other person in America.
